Strength in Surrender

Strength in Surrender

Our culture often defines strength as independence, self-sufficiency, and control. We’re told to “hold it together” and “never let them see you break.” But the kingdom of God flips that script. True strength is not found in control—it’s found in surrender.

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Notice the call: not partial trust, not occasional surrender, but all your heart, all your ways.

Surrender doesn’t mean passivity. It doesn’t mean giving up responsibility or effort. It means releasing control of what we cannot carry and allowing God to take His rightful place as Lord. It takes more courage to surrender than to cling. It takes more strength to kneel before God than to stand in pride.

Think of Jesus in Gethsemane. In His greatest moment of anguish, He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” That was surrender. And from that surrender came resurrection.

In your own life, surrender might look like:

  • Laying down worry over finances and trusting God as Provider.

  • Releasing the need to fix someone and trusting God as their Shepherd.

  • Yielding your plans to His timing, even when waiting feels painful.

The paradox of surrender is this: when we let go, God lifts us up. When we stop striving, His strength carries us. In surrender, we don’t lose—we gain freedom, peace, and divine direction.

Reflection Question: What’s one area you’ve been clinging to that God is asking you to lay at His feet?
